South Carolina Aquarium

The South Carolina Aquarium on Charleston Harbor is a really neat place to check out while in Charleston, South Carolina.  There are plenty of areas to go to and it does not matter how old you are.  There is the Great Hall, which introduces the aquarium to visitors.  It has a large wall map of South Carolina that allows you to see the regions of South Carolina at the aquarium.  The Mountain Forest Aviary journeys some of the habitats in the Blue Ridge Mountains of South Carolina.  On your walk, you go through waterfalls and sheltered by a canopy of trees with songbirds in them.  Under the largest waterfall, there are two young river otters that you can see.  In the water, there are three different types of freshwater trout that you can see swimming.  In the Piedmont Gallery, you get to explore the natural habitats of bass, crappies and suckers.  The other exhibits give a peek into what South Carolina use to look like in prehistoric times and the science behind fly-fishing.  You get to discover the fish, reptiles, amphibians and plants in the Coastal Plains Gallery.  The Saltmarsh Aviary is an interesting exhibit that gives you the feeling of kayaking through a salt marsh tidal creek.  It allows you to get a close look at the coastal plants, birds and marine life.  In the Coast Gallery it shows sea horses, flounder and stingrays that live in the Charleston Harbor.  There are other exhibits in this gallery you can check out while you visit.  The centerpiece of the Ocean Gallery is a two-story Great Ocean Tank that holds hundreds of animals.  For instance there are sharks, pufferfish, and a loggerhead sea turtle in the tank.  Do not forget to look at the other exhibits in this gallery.  You cannot forget the Touch Tank, which allows you to touch live invertebrates.  They have hermit crabs, whelks, sea urchins, horseshoe crabs, Atlantic stingrays, and much more.  It sounds like you could have quite an adventure in the South Carolina Aquarium.
